“Winemaker Tim Shand sent through a range of excellent notes on his latest releases but perhaps most pertinent was this remark on the making of the Napoleone Vineyard Pinot Noir: “Mostly open fermented at 20% whole bunch, the blend also contains smaller 100% whole bunch and 100% whole berry ferment batches. I reckon the best way to approach any vintage with pinot noir is ts to try every technique known to man, leaving yourself the full artist’s palette to work with in blending when the dust settles (particularly important when making single vineyard wines). 2015 being 2015, every approach worked. So it all went in.”

Value here is about as good as it gets. We’re very lucky that the world appreciates our pinot noir but isn’t yet scrambling for it. This is meaty, peppery, laced with graphite and woodsmoke and yet it shows a power of dark, brooding, cherried fruit too. Fresh herb notes, almost into fennel root, help to highlight the wine’s layers of texture and flavour. The finish is then screwed tight-ish. At $29, it’s a rockstar.” – Campbell Mattinson
